I love how extreme found family is in one piece. Like they took supernatural line of "Family don't end in blood" and actually made good on it. Because it's not just that the crew found each other even before that only really very briefly Robin, Usopp and Luffy could say that anyone biologically related to them raised them.

Like Luffy had Garp and that's his grandpa but he also had Makino and Shanks and the red hair pirates and they were a family unit and he also had Ace, Sabo Dandan and the bandits and they were a family as well and it's never who mattered more to Luffy or who actually raised him cause they all did. It'd be hard to put him in a nuclear family structure because so many people fill the same roles in his life in different ways and that's great like Kung Fu panda said "that doesn't mean less for one parent it just means more for Luffy"

And that's the thing I think sometime fandom can get very obsessive with trying to pin down who is whose surrogate father/mother how do they fit in the nuclear family structure and while that's fun and there's nothing wrong with head cannon characters that way I also think it's important to remember that not every relationship needs a title or definition sometimes you are just family and that's valid too.

Ace had Luffy and Garp but he also had the whitebeard pirates and his pops same with Sabo and the revolutionaries

Zoro with Kuina and his old kendo master, that was maybe more of a rivals, mentor mentee relationship than whatever Mihawk Zoro and Perona had going on but it's all family none the less.

Chopper with Hiririluk and Kureha. Perona and Moria, Usopp with the little village boys and Kaya. Shanks and Buggy with the Roger Pirates. They might not all have had defined roles with each other but it was still family.

Just like Sanji, Nami, Franky and Law and their more defined Surrogate familes

And people like Vivi Robin Usopp and Shirahoshi who had/have their biological parents/family that love them and raised them.

It's nobody that I've just mentioned properly fitting squarely into any of these categories because it's all complicated family is complicated and its messy and it's big and everyone in your family might not have even met but it's family and it doesn't end in blood and for some people it never started there either.

Big fan of you just casually throwing children across the the entire grandkids towards various characters because of the insane implications this would have on various family ties.

Dragon being Rogers son and periodically being thrown onto Rogers ship by Garp When he wants some piece and quiet to toughen him up may imply he got to meet Shanks and Buggy at some point, who are kind of sort of but not really but also yes Rogers adoptive kids, which in turn would make them sort of step brothers, which in turn would kind of sort of but not really mean that they are both Crocodiles brothers in law but ALSO sort of Luffys uncles, which I imagine they both would have wildly different reactions too. Not even bringing Ace into this because what the fuck would that even make him in the stinky child au? When the kid you adopted may also be your brother in law and your biological child’s uncle once removed is the literal clown you’re working with. The longer he thinks about it the more he turns into the meme of the woman doing math.

Though I think by the time Roger finds Shanks (and I don't know how he comes across Buggy) Dragon is already 17 so he'd probably no longer get thrown on Roger's ship. I think by that time he's probably already been enlisted into the Marines (so now some body else's problem *lol*) But he might still encounter them because Garp will probably continue clashing with Roger because he has no other hobbies.

Either way Crocodile is regretting his life choices. Like when he got together with Dragon he probably knew nothing about him. Just a loner guy with no last name but one hell of a mission. And now this? X'D

(Also, this is not taking into consideration what kind of messed up background Crocodile could be from, there are various theories from being Whitebeard's kid to being Rock's kid to being Shakky & Rayleigh's kid to being from a complete no name bloodline. Like... maybe Crocodile is the only "normal" person in that whole circus of a family tree.)

(Side thought about Shanks. I wonder if he had any idea who Luffy was *lol*)

the fuck is crocodile's deal???

thinking about how its next to impossible to construct a proper backstory for crocodile because of how little we know of him and how little he makes sense as a person

like we know nothing of mihawk but his personality is much like zoro. he wants to be the strongest so his ascetic lifestyle makes sense. hes a wildcard too but only because his moral compass follows strictly to himself (he keeps zoro alive and trains him because he wants a challenge, he became a warlord because he wants to be left alone, he joins cross guild for that same reason. the only times he went out of his way to do anything for others was when he shows shanks luffy's first bounty and maybe take care of perona)

but crocodile? we got NOTHING. we don't even know his last name. and i know some of them don't have last names but crocodile was a major villain. plus important characters without a last name kinda have a reason (sabo denounced his family name, buggy and shanks are implied to have been with the roger pirates since they were born)

like something happened to him to lose all his trust in other people and discard them like paper. he spent over a decade searching for pluton only to give up when luffy beat him? he willingly goes to impel down and planned to stay there until he heard whitebeard is gonna show up. he does fuck all to whitebeard. then he gives up on whitebeard, you know the reason why he's left impel down in the first place, then he saves ace, then he saves jinbe and luffy. he disappears for 10 real life years and he's back and we still got nothing on him

he doesn't trust people and yet pulled two bad bitches with swords. people praise how strong he is but he hasn't had a real fight with a real character who mattered since alabasta. and he's clearly strong cuz he got punched in the face with full blown haki and was still standing and he parried mihawk and doflamingo's attacks without any damage. speaking of doflamingo what the fuck was his deal with doflamingo? doffy clearly respected him enough to not believe he was beaten by smoker and he wanted a team up but then its never brought up again?? like was that just banter??

and the theories of his backstory are all still contradictory? whitebeard's birth son? well whitebeard didn't care that much about him and crocodile clearly doesn't either nor do any of the whitebeard pirates seem familiar with him. an ex-revolutionary? other than ivankov's comment of knowing crocodile "when he was a rookie" there's not much else. the backstory of the revolutionary army hasn't mentioned anything about him so we can toss that one out too. rocks d xebec's son? he was a warlord for over 20 years! youre telling me they never had a background check on the guy? you know they would want him dead if he was xebecs son given how far they went for roger's son. he doesn't have a grandpa who's besties with the fleet admiral to cover it up either

and then theres the theories that end up being too similar to other characters. ex-son of whitebeard? already debunked shown above and also thats just blackbeard. from a family of wealth and lost it, or was simply born evil? doflamingo did that already. cabin boy/child of an infamous pirate crew that was disbanded after the death of the captain? buggy and shanks are right there.

the man has so much going on and yet absolutely nothing at the same time. i NEED to know more about this guy at least tell me if he can even do haki PLEASE

I need to say that I love your writing very much. You're literally so amazing at describing characters and their emotions , their actions and the background as well!

Tho, If you feel comfortable enough - Can you make headcanon or drabble (choice is up to you) about Platonic!Roger Pirates and Whitebeard Pirates having a young crewmate that is very mature but is really self-sacrificial? By that I mean , they are not a fighter but don't want to be burden so they do anything they can to not be useless in their opinion?

So I did headcanons because I'm not good with drabbles. It's either 800-900 words minimum or nothing. I don't do drabbles. That being said, I hope you enjoy this, just remember this is just how I see them.

Roger Pirates

Roger totally pouts about you being very mature

You’re a kid, you should be enjoying life!

Orders the crew to give you as few chores as possible.

That’s not to say you don’t do plenty, just that Roger doesn’t assign it to you.

Constantly telling you to go have fun and enjoy the sunshine.

Part of you wants to, you want to make him happy, you kind of want to go have fun.

But what if you become a burden by doing so?

What if you cause trouble like Buggy and Shanks?

Nope! Not gonna happen!

And you go right back to helping out.

Rayleigh has had to forcibly stop you before.

Actually picked you up, set you in a chair, and ordered you to enjoy a small dessert.

In his defense, you’d been working yourself pretty hard at the time.

The entire crew knows not to wake you in the morning unless necessary.

It’s not that they don’t want your help, but they’re worried about you.

Rayleigh suggests a therapist.

You got so caught up in taking care of things that you missed the appointments.

The crew honestly tries their best to get you to stop and relax.

They’ve seen you overwork yourself, it wasn’t pretty and they all felt terrible for not stopping you sooner.

You still find plenty to do though.

Them not telling you to help actually makes you feel worse.

You’re being a burden by trying not to be a burden!

Rayleigh realizes this and you, Roger and Rayleigh reach an agreement.

You’re to do the chores you’re given and no more unless asked.

Buggy and Shanks aren’t allowed to ask you for help.

You’re allowed to get the usual early wake up call, but you have to spend a mandatory 2 hours being a kid and having fun.

Your fun usually involves helping Crocus organize the infirmary or just talking with Shanks (and keeping him out of trouble).

Neither Roger nor Rayleigh are happy about it, but they accept that it makes you happy so they don’t say anything.

You tell them that you just don’t want to be a burden… They laughed.

They told you that you were a kid, the only thing kids should worry about is being kids, not about being burdens.

Still, if doing a certain amount each day gets you to have fun later, they’ll take what they can get.

Whitebeard Pirates

Oh dear.

If you think Roger was bad, try dealing with his son.

Ace loves goofing off and causing trouble.

Haruta also likes causing trouble.

The two try to get you in on their trouble very, very often.

Not that they do, but they’re really trying to get you to enjoy life.

Unfortunately, watching them cause trouble and make messes only makes you want to do more.

Their jobs as commanders are important and they’re great fighters, but damn do they cause trouble for people.

Marco, Izou, and Thatch help though.

They keep you busy but also keep you from overworking yourself.

Thatch will give you easy tasks in the kitchen, Marco will give you simple tasks in the infirmary.

It’s always stuff that’s ‘important but I just don’t have the time’.

Izou helps in a rather odd way. He insists on spa days with you, says your company is relaxing, that he needs someone he can talk to but not like Ace or Thatch.

So you take spa days with him.

He actually really does like your company and it does help him relax, but it’s 90% for your sake.

Even Whitebeard has you help him.

He’s 20 ft tall, Luffy literally fits in his giant hand! He needs someone to help him with small things.

You’re young and small, so you do a lot of things he’s ‘too big’ for. Could he technically order things in his size? Yes, but that would be a lot of money when he has someone small who can do it for him.

At least, that’s what he tells people.

You’re often busy this way but actually do very little work.

Which was their intention.

You’re a kid, they don’t want you being too grown up but they know if they try and stop you, you’ll find other ways.

So they keep you busy while making things easy.

Organizing things, sorting produce, spa days, writing out various orders from the captain, reading off lists made by the commanders, all stuff that requires very little actual work but is still important to each of the commanders.

Ace and Haruta try to make their tasks fun as well.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it just annoys you.

Are they mocking you by doing this?

Whitebeard does have one very strict rule for you though.

No working after dinner, the time between dinner and bed is to be spent winding down and getting ready for bed.

Someone once caught you trying to clean the kitchen counters after dinner to make life easier for Thatch.

Whitebeard ‘grounded’ you for a week. You weren’t allowed to help anyone with anything, you felt awful.

Ace and Haruta were assigned to you to make sure of that.

You never disobeyed the rule again.

It’s not that you don’t want to have fun, but you just really don’t want to be a burden to anyone.

You spend some of the time after dinner just doing what you want to do.

i have to hard agree with dadan here, as a women who has no children but has raised dogs and cats your first priority is your child, when you take care of life that life is your responsibility whether you brought it into the world or not if it's in your care you are responsible.

Heavy thoughts on Ace's d3ath and i forgot the point but i don't think he deserved this. I love Garp he's a good character but if you like Garp and me shutting him down because of his actions bothers you please dont read my thoughts

Luffy and Ace were raised by her so the fact Garp let this happen hurts her badly as mother.

I don't know what Garp's reason is and i know he loves his job but if you are in the position where you have to choose over your job even if your someone who like, protects people and stuff cause basically the navy is the only form of police here- whether it would have changed Ace's fate or not you are obligated to care about your children, (there are complications in this statement but Garp was not an evil parent and Ace was not an evil person so the "you are not obligated to respect your parents if they don't respect you" doesn't count here cause Garp love those kids he love them and he cared about them. The fact that they were pirates means nothing Garp should have done something i don't care about his job.

i hope the point im trying to say gets across cause im bad at wording my thoughts but do you get whaat im saying i hope??

he said he respected Rogers so that's why he gave Ace to Dadan. The only respect he showed them was when he couldn't bring himself to hit Luffy when he ran at him to save Ace and basically let him get to Ace.

Dadan is worrying about Luffy she understands he is suffering the worse from all of this and she's correct in every action she did here

I have questions that also can do something for this what im saying.

I don't believe even though whitebeard was a pirate that he attacked innocent people, he protected people and even lands had protection because of him hence now that he's gone pirates are running wild over his territory hurting people and burning cities. Yall wanted to get rid of Ace because he's a "pirate" therefore he's a criminal in your eyes. What crime did he commit? yeah he may have burn down a few buildings trying to catch blackbeard yeah he may have done some stuff but i don't think Ace actively hurt people to get what he wanted outside of when he was a kid.

Do you think Ace is the type of person to act evilly just because he's a pirate?? I know pirates are bad and steal but that's probably his only crime besides burning things and beating up people i don't think he's done anything truly evil not as evil as the dragons.

I forgot what my point was but im really upset that Ace did not live and i blame the government, i see 0 hope for them outside of Koby im be honest. 0 redeemable qualities outside of Koby and Helmeppo something needs to change.

IMPORTANT PORTRAYAL NOTES

i won't lie. my portrayal is different than what you would expect from what the sources from which ace is from. manga / anime comes and what happens to it pre - timeskip and post time-skip. while i have important details listed in my pinned's meta masterlist and also in my carrd, i talk about it i know that some facts can be overlooked ( which is no problem ) so i seen other blogs do things like these, and i find it helpful to list a pill of the canon's blog in shorter version for easy understanding of what to expect on my blog. what's listed is my personal analysis, changes and what is incorporated in replies within the one piece world. triggering content ahead so be warned. any character mention does not have to apply to the muse that you play. you don't have to as a writer acknowledge these things / we can come to terms or i don't mind going canon vanilla if you don't wish to acknowledge these portrayal infos. i don't mind worldbuilding facts along with other people as well and in fact, it'd be happy to do so. for more info click the links under certain sentences ! or head to my study directory in my pinned.

001. rouge didn't die right after ace was born. i don't like that fact, i don't like it when people speculate that ace was over a year old before he left his mother's belly. that's just supernatural to me. there's nothing said that rouge was anything but normal. and the risk of death for a child who is longer in his mother's body than 40 weeks rises really high. ace would have died if rouge had kept him longer than a month over the estimated birth peroid. while i understand that she wanted to defend him with this was never said to be risky, it is. rouge held ace in her womb for 2 week more before his birth. that was enough time for garp to secretly transport her to a safe place on one of the islands on the south blue. she gave birth to ace and raised him for 3 more years before her health began to deteriorate. before her death, she entrusted ace to garp.

002. ace was 13 by the time he met luffy. the reason for the outstretched timeline is to fit the fact listed above. ace was raised first by rouge before he even got to foosha village. ace is older and it is also the reason of my canon being tied to the canon with another's person's muse ( law ). he was more destructive to himself than he was to sabo or luffy. when yes, he was indeed a bitter child after growing up to understand what happened to him, why he is here and why the world stands closed to him with a wall, he didn't blame anyone but himself for it and his grief, anger wasn't taken out as much on luffy as he was taking it on himself.

003. your muse has obviously no prior knowledge of his past. all that is known is that ace is a pirate, his name is portgas d. ace and his alias is fire fist ace. since forever his identity has been hidden by him at the cost of everything. the first person to ever know who ace is, who his biological family is, is sabo and then deuce. the fact that ace is roger's son didn't come to light ( for the public ) until ace was thrown in jail and then sentenced to death which he avoided. only whitebeard and certain members of the crew ( marco, izou ) knew about who he really was. his priority was and still is to talk as little as possible about himself, where he comes from and the only parental figure he adheres to is whitebeard. ace considers him his only father, because he has no memory of roger. he doesn't hate his biological father to the point of disrespect. he just thinks he owns him nothing.

004. ace is a hunter and gambler first and pirate second. living for a really long time in a forest that was like a real jungle. filled with predators, snakes, crocodiles. everything you can imagine, ace fought to survive, ace hunted to be able to bring meat back to dadan to be able to feed, to be useful in what he does. he has incredibly sharp instincts. he has insane tracking abilities, knows how to hunt and follows his own hunting code. he doesn't harm the first better animals, he's not cruel to them. ace in fact connects very much with animals, and they resonate with him just as much. his gambling addiction began in his early teens when he played to win money with adults in the gray terminal, in taverns placed within the goa kingdom to earn his and sabo's common goal. he would steal from people, pirates. but the card game was becoming something he was really good at. his addiction can be cruel, and ace is really serious when it comes to gambling.

005. post - timeskip when ace underwent rehabilitation from the damage he sustained after the war over marineford he learned to use haki. like luffy and his crew ace spent his days training, improving his own health and mentality. his haki empowered ability of the mera mera no mi he mastered is called ' the fudo myoo ' in short, a god of fire. much like luffy's gears, ace extended the power of mera mera no mi thanks to his hard training. the fruit's awakening ability is called the demon inferno, allowing ace to create fire-like creatures that are independent but controlled by ace and his flames. are a living part of him and have inherited behaviors and abilities ( eg. agility, speed, strength, combat ability ) that ace observed in animals during his life as a hunter / during his voyages and adventures over the seas.

006. ace has narcolepsy. which is basically a sleeping disease. he finds it hard to stay awake for long periods of time which causes him to fall asleep suddenly and randomly. he sometimes experiences muscle tone which is basically caused by strong emotions such as anger, sadness and excitement but most of the times laughter is the strongest case. there's no cure to this disease and since ace doesn't really have medication for this to at least keep the symptoms in check it appears pretty frequently in his case. most of the times ace falls asleep while eating because, when the meal is rich in carbohydrates and protein which are essential to build up strength he gets an uptake of tryptophan from the protein and then an increase of serotonin. eating also causes blood sugar levels to rise, which can lead to a decrease in energy and the more he feels tired the easier it is for his narcolepsy to trigger suddenly.

007. ace is depressed. maybe he doesn't look like that at first glance. when someone meets him ace seems to be an incredibly kind, carefree and confident person. and yes, he is exactly like that. however, ace also has some problems with his mentality that were born when he was a child left behind within the walls of the goa kingdom. he also struggles with a lot of insecurity when it comes to his relationship, self-worth and survival trauma after the war. ace post- timeskip doesn't resemble himself in some aspects that happened before the war. it changed him, the way he had to live changed him. what happened between luffy and him changed his perspective about a few things, about his will to live. he wants to live, he finally understood that he doesn't want to die. he wants to live, even if it is a sin. even if his existence is hell on earth, he wants to live because luffy proved to him that despite who ace thinks he is, there are people who love and loved him.

008. ace is indifferent heat or high temperatures. they are completely indifferent to him, and he would most likely feel a change in temperature only if something were hotter than his orange flames. ( these flames reach around 1,100°c to 1,200°c / 2,000º f to 2,200º f. ) otherwise ace does not feel a change in climate, temperature-wise would be logical considering when he was moving through the deserts in alabasta his clothing was completely black. as is well known, black or dark colours attracts heat and sunlight but it made absolutely no impression on him even when he spent hours in the bare sun in the middle of the desert.

Does one piece goes like most shonen or does it as you said subverts the ideas? I only watched the most popular ones so idk what are the tropes

i think it depends on the trope! not all of which are specific or exclusive to shonen, for the record.

there are some concepts and topics where one piece likes to play with your expectations.

the protagonist with mysterious parentage is… pretty common in shonen. either he has no idea who his dad is, or he knows but his dad’s a mysterious person, never around or never able to answer our hero’s questions. how frustrating! we want answers about our hero’s heritage, the legacy he’s inherited! luffy… doesn’t care about any of that. dragon who? the legacy luffy’s inherited is gold roger’s, a man he has no relation to whatsoever. (though certain fan theories wondered otherwise, for a time.) because blood doesn’t matter, your dreams and will and choices do! the marines don’t believe that, and they’re dead wrong. trying to execute roger’s biological son does nothing for them—it’s in trying to kill whitebeard’s chosen son, luffy’s chosen brother, that they get the war they’ve been wanting.

other concepts are sacrosanct.

the power of friendship™️ is a joke in english-speaking anime/manga fandom, the concept comes up so often in shonen and shojo, but i don’t think one piece would ever mess with that. the importance of your friends, and what you are willing and able to do for them, is so essential to the series. characters can leave, thinking they’re looking out for the crew’s safety, but luffy is gonna get them to admit what they really want (which is to stay part of his crew), and he’s going to bring them back. to do otherwise would be a betrayal of certain fundamental themes of the series. …of course, you could make the argument that ace’s death was a betrayal of those themes. (it was certainly unexpected to a lot of readers—though some had cynically placed ace in a “mentor big brother = DOOMED” box in their heads years prior.) but that loss ends up being foundational to luffy’s resolve post-timeskip. what could have been a betrayal of themes instead reinforced them: luffy’s failed once, there is no way he’s failing again.

and then there are things not sacrosanct so much as… not thought through?

for an example of something played almost too straight, just look at zoro’s backstory. the existence of a girl who dies and is therefore the root motivation for our hero’s entire life is classic fridging. the whole tashigi-is-secretly-kuina fan theory sprung out of the belief that there had to be more to kuina’s story than that, that it couldn’t just be… that.

#there’s also a lot of dead parents in op which is a pretty cliche element of shonen—as much for narrative convenience as character building #it’s easier to have all these teen characters out and about in the world if there’s no parent at home to protest or protect them yknow?#not even getting into how ‘dead parent’ is a cheap and easy motivating tactic (though it certainly is that)#imo lots of the subversions in op are superficial things. more poking fun at cliches than engaging with the reasons they *became* cliche…#it’s fun but it’s not deep. i hope that makes sense?#tos answers #one piece #—the power of friendship #—bloodlines vs chosen family #—fridging

The Whitebeard crew took Ace from where he was (the island where he was fighting Jinbei — I don't remember the name rn) and brought him into their ship while Ace was unconscious/unable to defend himself. That's the literal definition of a kidnapping. Ace didn't consent to be brought there dkjdjdj.

And (thanks for the picture btw!!) Marco may have told him he was free to go, but honestly it reads like someone taking you against your will to a house in the middle of the woods with fuck tons of wild and dangerous animals around, and when you complain they tell you "oh well if you don't like it here you're free to go". It's not much of a choice, isn't it?

And like. Sure they took care of him while he was here but like. First he was providing them entertainment (very important, that), second they wanted something from him, so of course they took care of him. It's manipulation and coercion if nothing else lmao.

And, truthfully — I'm not mad at those events!! It makes sense!! They're fucking pirates, of course they do things like this!! They're not the good guys in this world, they're criminals!

I would just like if it was a bit more recognized that Whitebeard is not an example of parenting lmao. Dude is sexist, selfish, stays in his inaction until his pride is attacked, and plays favorite among his kids — and against, that's fine. He's a pirate. You both would get so flustered at first, but now you only ignored them or laughed about it.

As it started getting darker you decided to get inside as the air was starting to make you shiver.

“Stay for a little while, please?” Ace made his puppy eyes, the ones that you could never say no to. You rolled your eyes and cuddled next to him, immediately feeling the warmth of his fire body.

He started talking, his tone changed suddenly making him look serious.

“So, Y/n, I’ve been wanting to tell you this for a while now” He said, his eyes had this glow and you could see as his cheeks started turning red.

“Nothing’s going to happen to me, I promise I will come back” He said as if he could read your mind, then he held you close to reassure you that he would be back.

Later that night you both walked into your room, Ace closing the door with a strength that could almost break the door.

“Shhhh…are you trying to wake everyone up” You whispered as he laid on the bed, he had a smile drawn across his face. You couldn’t help it but smile too.

You were a bit nervous, being the first time you had ever been together like this. You dimmed the light of the lamp on your side table.

“No,no don’t do that please, I want to see you” Ace said making you blush, his eyes were kind and you knew he was true to his words. You started slowly undressing, he did too trying to make you feel comfortable.

When you finally were completely naked in front of each other, Ace looked at you with loving eyes, he didn’t have to say a word, you knew what he thought. Your eyes roamed over his body, looking at the scars he had on his body, each and everyone telling a story because all his life he had been fighting.

“Yes, sorry, I was just thinking” You said without giving out exactly what you were thinking about.

“About what? If I may know.” He asked politely, he was such a gentleman another reason why you liked him so much.

You distracted him with some other thoughts you had about the recent events that had been going on in the world, and how everything was chaotic as the new pirate era was starting.

As time passed and you got to know each other better on that island, you both were so close. You could even say that you were really good friends, but he could never know your feelings towards him.

You tried to hide them, all until that night. You were celebrating, and alcohol started to circulate. You were so happy that you didn’t realize how much you had been drinking, and perhaps that was the reason why you were feeling especially happy. But you didn’t care anymore, as long as you weren’t alone with Sabo everything would be alright.

Everything was going ok, until you started dancing, taking a piece of clothing every time. You were definitely not thinking straight but the freedom you felt, just for once you were not overthinking everything.

You were about to get on a table when you felt some hands hold you tight and carry you away from the crowd.

“What are you doing Y/n?” Sabo asked you, looking all serious, he was concerned.

“Nothing, celebrating I guess” You replied laughing and trying to head back to where you were dancing and laughing with some friends you had made.

“I don’t think you should go back in there, maybe it's time to go back” Sabo said, holding your arm, stopping you from making another mistake.

“Here, you are freezing Y/n” He said and lent you his coat. You immediately felt the warmth. You thanked him and continued walking until you got to the little house where you were staying.

He prepared you some hot chocolate and warmed some of the food that you prepared this morning. You couldn’t help to imagine how a good boyfriend he would be, and how sweet and loving he could be.Once he finished, he sat next to you and gave you your food.

“Thank you Sabo, for everything” You said, sipping on the hot chocolate. He smiled and said that he was scared that something could happen to you in that bar, as you didn’t know who could be there, maybe someone dangerous.

The most common characters that could supposedly be one of Rocks D. Xebec’s children:

Black Beard.

Shanks.

Buggy

Crocodile.

Dragon

Luffy's Mom

The whole "don't know who Shanks and Buggy really are" and how they ended up on Roger's ship is one of the biggest mysteries as well as both being the same age and would have been babies when God Valley happened. I would find it funny on one hand if Buggy was Rocks' kid, but then it would also spoil his whole "poser, being dragged along for the ride" vibe.

Shanks is said to be from the West Sea, and had brought it up before... but that is about it. Buggy is from “the grand line somewhere”... we don’t know how old either of them were when they boarded Roger’s ship, nor do we know where God Valley was (Celestial Dragons taking up residence in the New World doesn’t sound like a very smart idea).

Blackbeard... is on the same page. We don’t know anything prior to him joining Whitebeard’s ship when he was a teenager/young adult, other than he was sad and lonely (going by hints in his “as a kid” SBS pic). He is 40 now, and God Valley happened 38 years ago (shanks and buggy are 39 currently). All three of them were toddlers at the time. Now all three of them are Yonko, and no one should be surprised if it does become true. It is, in fact, quite by-the-book if any of these three are revealed to be Rocks kid. Blackbeard even named his damn ship “The Saber of Xebec” and was perhaps the first ever actual reference to Rocks D. Xebec in One Piece before Sengoku name dropped the dude. Blackbeard being the “Syndrome” of Rocks fanboys would be even more Perfect.

Dragon being Rocks' son would be odd, as he would've been a teenager when God Valley happened (i think 17, the same age Luffy was at the start of OP). I could almost see him want to rebel against Rocks and side with Marines... choosing to use Garp's name bc he defeated Rocks, and using the Rocks name is like painting a bullseye on your back. Then finding out how corrupt the Marines were and deciding to go out on his own to be neither a Pirate nor a Marine. And Garp is the kind of person that wouldn’t disown people once he considers them family.

The "painting a bullseye on your back" thing could also apply to the Crocodile theory. But him, it was that he was taken in by Whitebeard (a crew member of Rocks at the time) after God Valley and, being 8yo at the time, he already had formed his own opinions and didn't want to end up some division commander (like Ace ended up being), he wanted power for himself and WB was in the way, and didn't want to drink the "found family" kool-aid (even tho some of that prob did stick... like ketchup on a white wall). It is why he says he doesn't care about social status nor getting stupid amounts of money (he had that shit before, it did nothing for him), and wanted to work in the shadows and accrue military might... like a crocodile, he's an ambush predator.

Dragon and Crocodile both have “dark secrets” that could possibly wreck their reputations. Tho Dragon’s is stated to not be as bad enough to stop people from following him... Being “outed” as Rocks’ child, when all records of the man was erased from history, would qualify as something neither would want to get out. This isn’t even going to go into the whole “Croc might have been a woman” thing, Ivankov was a spy... they just know dirt on people.

Some people have sided with the “why not both?” end of this theory and say Dragon and Crocodile are siblings... there is a 8/9 year age gap, Dragon being the older of the two. They do have similar names (if you know a bit about kanji and how the words for dragon and crocodile are used in Japanese and Chinese). Crocodile’s actions in Marineford mirror those that Dragon did in Loguetown, making them bookends story wise. Oda enjoys re-using themes from one arch to the other (see also: Alabasta = Dressrosa) as well as using Themed Names for relatives. It could explain why Croc didn’t automatically click onto Luffy being a relative, as the Monkey D. clan isn’t actually related to him... but Dragon was and Croc prob thought he was going by just “Dragon” much as he was going by “Crocodile” (Sir Crocodile, since he became a Warlord)....

Luffy’s Mom-- “But, what about Crocomom?” i hear!... yeah, go ahead an apply that to the “Whitebeard took Croc after God Valley” theory and add met Dragon at Roger’s Execution as adults, then sprinkle in “have to hide from authorities” with some more “i have my own ambitions i don’t want to give up on to be a mom.”

mkay. Moving on. I believe Garp’s wife was a Celestial Dragon. He became a Marine at 22. if Dragon was his son, Garp would’ve been 23 at the time of his birth, becoming a father less than a year after crawling out of the tiger infested jungle. It could totally have been that he met his wife, she convinces him to join the marines, was a stipulation even for them to get married. Garp might have even felt obligated to do so. We later see what happened to Celestial Dragons when they leave the Red Line/Marijuia to live among commoners with Doflamingo’s family. If they lived at Marine HQ instead of out in the public, then it would be safer for her.

Now if Dragon is Rocks kid and Luffy’s mom is Garp’s daughter with a Celestial Dragon.... Oda said she was still a live... she could be living on the Red Line with the rest of them, maybe even with her Mom (Garp’s (ex?) wife).... but because Luffy was Dragon’s son, he couldn’t stay with them and had to live with Dragon or Garp, and that ended up being Garp. This would make Luffy the grandson of both Rocks and Garp. Garp joined the Marines wanting to to be closer to his wife, but still wasn’t allowed to... So Dragon is trying to dismantle the system instead. (Dragon as Garp’s Son-in-Law and taking the family name legally still checks out)

Now stepping back a bit. Dragon is Garp’s actual son and his name is reflective on his mother being a Celestial Dragon as a big “fuck you” to them. Now he is sure that it wouldn’t shake people’s belief in him if it is revealed, it may even get people to side with him because of how unjust CDs would treat their own kin (if Doffy wasn’t such an asshat, him and Rosinante would’ve fit right in with the Revolution Army).

now... Luffy’s mom being Rocks’ kid. (stop it. we’ve talked about Crocomom already). She was taken by the Marines after Rocks was defeated and his crew disbanded after God Valley. She could’ve been anywhere between 1-20yo at the time. Considering Dragon’s age at the time was 17, and not forgetting about Standards and Practices, she was likely over the age of 7 at the time (loooook.... Oda wasn’t afraid of Pudding (16) and Sanji (21) having a whole arc about being in an arranged marriage, and Luffy(19) and Hancock(31) are also cringe) ... So she would also have to be over the age of 18 when Luffy was born and the Rocks thing happened 38 years ago, and Roger was executed 24 years ago. Let’s say she was in her 20s around the time Roger was executed. Landing her between 6-14yo when God Valley happened. She would be in her 40′s/early 50s at this point (Luffy is 19, almost 20 at this point)....

Now... Dragon leaving the Marines to rescue the Pirate Princess* from her tower of imprisonment, them getting eloped and having Luffy. But while Dragon was away, she was re-captured a few years later and toddler Luffy ending up with Garp. (this is obviously, the least likely to happen, but it would be tragically romantic if it did.)

*Remember, Rocks was considered the first real King of All the Seas with designs of taking over the whole World, before Roger even found the One Piece and was given the title of Pirate King... So Rocks was a King by Conquest, his children would be considered Fisher Royals, those with a title but no power. Ace had the same thing going on, he was Roger’s Son, but that only caused him more problems than it is worth so went by his Mom’s name. Blackbeard wants Rocks legacy and Luffy wants Rogers.... It would be interesting story parallel if Rocks and Roger mirror each other in that their actual children didn’t even want to be in the same zip code as their fathers’ legacies.

Portgas D. Ace & his long lost sister Scenario

You were a part of the Whitebeard pirates since you can think about it. Whitebeard was the man who adopted you as a little kid and he became your father like anyone else on the Moby Dick.

During the last few days the rumors about a young pirate called Portgas D. Ace or Fire Fist Ace, who wants to kill Whitebeard, got louder and louder.

You have heard in a small town about him for the very first time and shortly after that a fishman from fishman island told your crew and captain that this rookie had burned down the Whitebeard flag at fishman island.

All of you stared at Whitebeard and waited for his next order.. It was one of the biggest offenses in the world of pirates to burn down the flag of another crew.. But instead of becoming angry Whitebeard laughed: „Gurararara such a brat wants to fight me? Let's see what will happen to him in the New World.“

You were surprised.. What did this mean? This boy had offended their crew and Oyaji.. And he didn't want to do anything? „Oyaji!“ You went over to him: „Let me fight this rookie for you! He has insulted our crew.. Even worse! He has insulted you! I want to fight for you!“

But Whitebeard shook his head and smiled: „Y/N, I'm thankful that you want to defend the honor of our crew.. But do as I said. Who am I that I would accept any call out from any brat who means to be strong enough to fight me. He will learn pretty fast how hard the sea in the New World will be.“ - „But..!“

Whitebeard looked at you and patted your head: „That's an order my child.“ And so the discussion ended. You didn't understand how Whitebeard could keep so calm, but you accepted his decision and lived your life at the Moby Dick.

Two months later you were alone on a little island. It was also Whitebeard's territory and you had to look if everything was okay. Suddenly a carrier pigeon arrived at your location and while you were reading the news made you very angry.

This damn rookie has started a fight against Jinbei! A friend of the Whitebeard Pirates. Without any hesitation you took your little boat and drove to the island. This time Ace has gone too far!

When you arrived at the fighting place the Moby Dick arrived as well and sadly you got no chance to kick Ace's ass.. But while you watched the little fight (if you want to call it a fight) between Whitebeard and Ace you feel a strange connection to the rookie.. You had the feeling to know him.. But why?

You shook your head.. That meant nothing.. You knew him because of the news.. Nothing more.. The fight ended pretty fast and the Whitebeards took him and his crew on the Moby Dick. Much to your displeasure.. Which plans had Oyaji with him..?

Some time passed during that Ace attacked Whitebeard again and again and tried to kill him as he had announced, but he had no chance against the emperor. You watched these little fights, but never tried to talk to Ace..

Since the day he had first seen you, he looked at you with such a passionate hate that you started to evade him.. What was his problem? You have never talked to him or done anything..

Thoughtfully you stroke over the tattoo of your real father Gol D Roger and become sad.. When Ace really wanted to join the Whitebeard Pirates you would have to live with this passionate hate.. And it hurt you.. Even though you don't know why this young man has such a deep impact on you..

„Hey you!“ A voice sounded behind you and you quickly turned around. It was Ace, he looked at you with the same look as always: „My name is Y/N.“ You answered him and looked with a pissed look at him: „Hm.. Why do you wear this Jolly Roger?“ You looked at him irritated: „Because I want to? What do you care about?“

Ace stiffened and continued to scowl at you: „Because that's the sign of the devil. You should not wear it as a tattoo.“ And with these words he turned away and walked away. You laid a hand on your tattoo.. No one should know who you were.. But he was wrong.. Gol D Roger wasn't a devil.. He was one of the coolest pirates you know..

For weeks that was the only talk you had with Ace and to be honest you didn't have to say anything to him. His words had hurt you..

Late at night Whitebeard called you in his cabin and as you came in you were very surprised to see Ace as well there. „Did something happen?“ You looked at your Oyaji and ignored the other one.

Whitebeard laughed calmly and looked at you two: „I think.. I have an important message for you two..“ - „What do you mean..?“ You two asked like one person. Again Whitebeard laughed and looked at you for a long moment: „You two really look alike.. But that's the way it should be with twins..“

You two stared at him confused.. Twins..? What did that mean? „You two are the children of Gold Roger and Portgas D. Rouge.. I knew that you had a brother Grace.. But I didn't know where he was.. So now he is here.. Ace is your big brother. I hope you two will get along better from now on.. You are family.“

In shock you stared at Ace and Ace as well stared at you. Brother? Sister? But he was such an idiot! You were stunned.. How could that be? Him of all people? You pressed your lips together and clenched your hands into fists, tears ran down your face.

All of a sudden two strong arms pulled you to a warm body and when you look up you look into Ace's warm smiling face: „I'm sorry little sis.. I.. Was an idiot.. But I didn't knew that you have to carry the same burden as me.. I.. I swear that I will be a better big bro from now on..“

What was that warm feeling which filled your heart? These words.. You always felt loved by your family.. By the Whitebeard Pirates, but this time it was something different.. This was your brother.. Your real brother.. The only family member you had in this strange world.

You nodded and pressed your face against his chest: „Don't be such an idiot always..“ You mumbled and Ace started to laugh a little bit.

During the next few days you got to know Ace better and better he talked a lot about his little brother Monkey D. Luffy and how he wanted to become the pirate king. You as well told him everything about your adventures with the Whitebeard Pirates.

It was such a great time. Even though it wasn't uncommon for you two to start arguing whether it was about food or the other person's opinion, you both just had the same fiery temperament.

But you two also knew that you could count on each other and became a very strong team. When Ace became the commander of the second division, you were even appointed his vice.

Since Ace knew he was your big brother, he also cared a lot more about you and was there for you. When you had a nightmare or were sad you could always come to him, no matter what time, and he somehow always managed to make you laugh.

He was really a fantastic big brother for you, who gave the best hugs and would never let anyone hurt you.

a/n: hiya!!!! Here is ace’s fluff alphabet! 💗I know you only asked for K & L but I hate only answering a few letters of these at a time LMAO 💀ALSOOOOO I’m going to Sanjis at some point too, because I got a lot more angst asks than fluff so yahhhh! Anywayssss hope you enjoy<3333

A-Activities (what do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?)

Ace absolutely loves to pull pranks on you AND he loves to pull pranks with you. Once a month you actually have an all-out prank war against one another where even the crew fear that they will be caught in the middle of it.

Oh, and true to his character, the two of you spend a lot of time eating food together. It’s very difficult for any normal human being to eat anything close to the amount Ace eats, so more often than not, it’s you staring at him in awe while he scoffs down another plate of food.

B-Beauty (what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?)

He finds your smile to be one of the most beautiful things he’s ever seen, it’s even more beautiful when the smile is directed at him. The moment you smile at him everything else in the world seems to melt away. Ace does everything in his power to bring a smile to your face, because when you smile everything else seems to fall into place. (SO CLICHÉ I KNOW BUT IT’S TRUE!)

C-Comfort (how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?)

His go to method of comfort is cuddles. He just wraps his arms around you and gives you lots of forehead kisses. He’ll say all these kind things about you and ask what you need from him. If you’re not sure, or if you don’t feel like talking, he’ll patiently wait until you’re ready to talk.

D-Dreams (how do they picture they future with their s/o?)

In every possible future he envisions, you are there. To Ace, there is no future unless you are with him. It’ll be the two of you living life to the absolute fullest, taking it day-by-day.

He isn’t too keen on having (biological) children as he doesn’t want them to be burdened with the blood of Gol D. Roger.

E-Equal (are they the dominant one in the relationship or rather passive?)

He tends to take the more dominant role in the relationship. It’s just his natural personality that seeps through, it’s truly not intentional. He’s confident and loud so there’s not really any way you can’t not listen to him. However, if you were to voice any opinions or comments, you’ve got all his attention!

F-Fight (would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?)

I talk about his fights with his s/o a little in his angst alphabet. Here it is again!

Fights with Ace, although they don’t happen often, can quickly get out of hand. He’s stubborn and his inability to accept that he’s not always right can cause a minor disagreement to escalate into an all-out fight. On a few occasions you have argued about him never turning his back on an opponent.

Your fights tend to be followed by cooldown time. Things can get quite heated (no pun intended) so you need some alone time and space to breathe. After that though, you comeback together and apologize.

G-Gratitude (how grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?)

Ace felt unloved and unwanted by the world growing up (save for Luffy and Sabo, oh and Dadan), so it was quite the change to experience the unconditional love you provided him. He will forever be grateful for what you have done for him, in fact, he’s so grateful about it that he can never shut up about it! Much like how he gushes about his ‘stupid kid brother’ to the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace will also never shut up about you to anyone he talks to. Your name somehow always makes its way into any conversation he has.

H-Honesty (do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?)

The only secret he kept from you was that he was the son of the Pirate King. He was scared that once you knew, you would view him differently. But over time he was able to see that that would never be the case. So, after telling you that, he never kept anything from you ever again. Ace actually finds sharing secrets with you to be a weight off his shoulders.

I-Inspiration (did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?)

You were another person that was able to show Ace he is worthy of being loved. It’s an insecurity of his that will probably never go away, but that’s okay because you’re more than happy to remind him daily.

J-Jealousy (do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?)

I talked about Ace’s jealousy in his angst alphabet! But I’ll go over it again here!

When he gets jealous he turns into such a man child. He’s pouting and moping around while mumbling to himself. He develops quite a petty attitude. If you were to ask him “want to go get something to eat?” he’d respond with “why don’t you just go and ask ____ for some food.” But, as soon as you begin commenting on how jealous he’s acting he’s going to deny it to the end of his days.

K-Kisses (are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?)

I feel as though I may give Ace a little too much credit when it comes to this because I want to think that he’d be one of those amazing kissers, like he just has a knack for it. But in reality, that probably wouldn’t be the case.

Ace is more likely to be quite an overexcited kisser. He’s keen and passionate, that’s for sure. But with your first kiss, he’s a little too keen and tries to move way to fast. After some calming down and a little bit of a giggle to one other he’s in the zone.

L-Love confession (how would they confess to their s/o?)

The two of you are just talking and he’s, unsurprisingly, brought up his brother, Luffy. What is surprising however, is when he tells you how badly he wants you guys to meet each other. Your first reaction was “yeah that stands to reason he wants all of us to meet luffy” but before you could say anything Ace is already going on like “yeah, I just can’t wait to have the two people I love most in the world meet. It’d be real cool” (or something along those lines and probably a little less cheesy LMAO). You just stare at him like “heh?” and he stares at you like “uhhhh… yeah I said what I said?”

M-Marriage (do they want to get married? How do they propose? What would the marriage be like?)

Heck yeah, this dude wants to get married! Getting to show you off to everyone? Yes please! Getting to tell you in front of everyone he knows just how much he loves you? BIG YES. Oh, AND a big ass party afterwards? THIS DUDE CANNOT WAIT! Being able to marry you is one of his dreams, and he’s actually been thinking about since the first date you guys went on.

But, he’s really struggling with how to propose to you. He’s gone through every cliché in the book. A ring at the bottom of your glass, in your food, a carriage ride etc. They’re all great ideas but he doesn’t think they suit the dynamic of your relationship. So, he’s going to enlist the help of Whitebeard Pirates and create an elaborate prank (that has a 50/50 chance of going wrong but also still working out exactly as he wanted).

N-Nicknames (what do they call their s/o?)

He likes to call you hot stuff or baby. Initially, these nicknames resulted in a lot of teasing from the other whitebeard pirates but neither of you cared.

O-On cloud nine (what are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?)

Whitebeard and a few of the other division commanders are the first to notice. I mean, it’s not that hard… He is constantly bringing you up in every conversation (if you’re not there) and if you are there, they can’t even get his attention for a moment. You have his undivided attention! It isn’t until Marco or someone says “You’re down baddddd, Ace” that he’s like HUH?

P-PDA (are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?)

Ace loves PDA. He is all about kissing you in front of everyone else. So much so that you constantly get told to “get a room!”. Ace loves to show off his relationship with you to the whole wide world. He’s incredibly proud to have found someone that loves him wholeheartedly.

Q-Quirk (some random ability they have that is beneficial in a relationship?)

Well, thanks to his devil fruit, his body temperature tends to run pretty warm, so you have your own personal heater.

R-Romance (how romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?)

Ace is romantic in his own way, that’s for sure. He expresses his love through teasing and jokes, but also through quality time. He’s big on that. Making sure all his attention is on you so you know just how much he loves you.

S-Support (are they helping their s/o achieve their goals do they believe in them?)

He has so much faith in your ability to achieve your goals. He wants to be able to help you in any way he can, so if you come to him and ask for help, he would be absolutely ecstatic! Ace just wants to be a part of your success story (in the best way possible, I know some people only want to because then they get credited but that’s not why ace wants to do it at all! Nothing makes Ace happier than seeing those he loves achieve their goals).

T-Thrill (do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship or do they prefer certain routine?)

Your relationship is already spiced out enough as it is. He’s got an extremely mischievous personality so is constantly getting up to god knows what, and some how always manages to drag you into it. If anything, your relationship could do with a little more routine (but you both are extremely happy with the way it is).

U-Understanding (how good do they know their partner? Are they empathetic?)

Ace is an extremely empathetic individual. He understands a lot more than most, just how awful negative emotions can be (whether that’s sadness, insecurity, anger etc.). So he is quick to your aid whenever something seems to wrong.

V-Value (how important is the relationship to them? What is it’s worth in comparison to other things in their life?)

All relationships in Ace’s life are extremely important to him. He even values them more than his own life. Your relationship is no exception. You’ve shown him love, and accepted him for who he truly is, so there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you and he makes that very clear every single day.

W-Wild card (a random fluff headcanon?)

He knows all your food orders off by heart. And when I say all your food orders, I mean ALL of them. He knows your food orders for each of your different moods. He memorised them pretty quickly so that he could surprise you with food regardless of your mood.

X-XOXO (Are they very affectionate? Do they love to kiss and cuddle?)

He is an extremely affectionate individual. Ace is practically attached to your hip at every possible moment. An arm will always be thrown around your waist or shoulders, and he literally wants to spend all day smothering you in kisses. He’s shameless when it comes to affection.

Y-Yearning (how will they cope when they are missing their partner?)

He copes by talking about you to EVERYONE. He tells the crew stories about you (mind you these are stories not only that they’ve heard multiple times, but they were also there to witness themselves). It gets to the point where even Whitebeard is like “ya know what Ace, you can go visit them.”

Z-Zeal (are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? If so, what kind?)

As I said previously, all relationships in Ace’s life are extremely important to him. We saw what lengths he was willing to go to when Thatch was killed by Blackbeard, and you would be no different. In fact, Ace would be willing to do all of that and so much more, if it was for you.
